Originally had a wordpress.com site, just bought hosting and installed wordpress.org on the site. Login is at sitename.com/wp-admin so seems as if it installed correctly..

However, I do not see the option to install plugins anywhere. The dashboard looks the same as on wordpress.com. What am I missing here?

Thanks so much for any assistance!

Are you sure that you are logged into the correct site?

    yess

  4. Hopefully the site your are referring to is not the one in your profile. If it is then you're using WordPress.COM and are not self-hosted.

WordPress.COM doesn't have the option to install plugins. See this link for an explanation.

Can you share the URL to the site you mean?

Hmmm. I just installed it on a temp site instead and it works fine. Can I not override a wordpress.com site by installing wordpress.org on it?

( it was indeed the site listed on my profile )

  7. Can I not override a wordpress.com site by installing wordpress.org on it?

Not exactly. Your DNS name for your site points to a WordPress.COM installation right now.

When your replacement self-hosted WordPress.ORG site is ready and setup, then you contact your DNS provider and change the DNS name to point to your new server.

If the DNS is hosted be WordPress.COM (I haven't checked but you should know) then you'll need to contact them for changing the DNS record.
