I am making a back-up so I can upgrade WP. I used my ftp program Cyberduck and ticked ‘show hidden files” I also made a mirror with Cyberduck synchronize. then I checked whether the .htaccess files were there, but I don’t see them. Do you always have them, so they must be there or not?

  • No you dont always have them. If you are hosted on a windows server you wont have one. And if you arent using pretty permalinks, chances are you wont have one. Unless, of course, you distinctly remember creating one for another purpose.

And even if you dont see it, an upgrade wont bother it, since WP doesnt “ship” with one to overwrite the one you cant find.

I had a similar nightmare trying to find out where my .htaccess file was (or if i had one).
    This script was helpful though.

Thanx both of you. I already back-up-ed and upgraded WordPress succesfully, so obviausly I didn’t have any ht-access files:-) In fact I think it is logic, because I just realized my host uses windows servers instead of Apache.
