   When im done writing a post it should go to one of four categories, but i cannot figure out how to put the post into a category.

   Simply tick one or more of the categories in the list on the right-hand side of the Edit/Add New Post page

   The only things on the right hand side of that page are: Publish, Tags, and Feature Image

   Checkout your "Screen Options" at the top right of the "Add New Post" page, "Categories" may simply be unchecked.
