publius: This version of widgets only works with WP 2.1 and up. It won’t work with the 2.0 series.
I thought there was a version available for download that would work with WP 2.0. I do not see one.
I’ll put one together early this week.
Huh. Y’know, I’m using the oldest version of widgets on 2.0+ installs all over the place; I have a couple of clients who installed 2.1 and are using the oldest version (since that’s what they had available, and they didn’t check for newer). NONE of us are having any trouble of this sort with either version of wp. And we didn’t move the js stuff anywhere either….
It still doesn’t work for me. Funny though, it was working for my 2.1 until about a week ago, and I don’t think I messed around with anything. I’ve tried installing the new version and everything outlined here. Anyone have any updates?

otto, i have the same problem than publius.
i’m using WP2.1 and i’d like to install v1.2.1 of wigets but there is no scriptaculous files in this link
http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/widgets.zip
where can i have the good scriptaculous files related to widgets 1.2.1 please?
@clemini: The scriptaculous files are built into WordPress 2.1. You don’t need any other files. Just install the latest widgets plugin. It will work.
thank you otto.
i did what you recommended but now i have the same pb than publius
i have this message when i press the sidebar widgets button:
“Fatal error: Call to undefined function: wp_deregister_script() in /homepages/29/d196333458/htdocs/wp-content/plugins/widgets/widgets.php on line 204”
and this is the same message for every theme i tried
(i am using WP2.1 and the very last version of widgets plugin).
is there any solution for this issue?
If you are getting this error:
“Call to undefined function: wp_deregister_script()”
Then you are *not* using WP 2.1.
That function is defined in script-loader.php which is include’d from the main wp-settings.php file. It cannot be “undefined” unless you have a previous version of WordPress.
If you recently upgraded, then you may have not uploaded all the 2.1 files. Double check every file and make sure that you actually did upgrade it.
chuchris: sounds like a change in the backend programs on your host. Check to see if they might have upgraded something like php, mysql or apache….
hey thank you so much otto you were right π
i was sure to have the last version since i downloaded 1 week ago but actually it was not the case.
now i’m gonna try to understand how can i see my 2 sidebar columns in my widgets menu and not only one
thank you again anyway
@vkaryl
That’s a possibility. How do I go about resolving the issue though? Overwriting the WP install and hoping things will go fine? Re-running the upgrade script?
chuchris: you need to verify with your host what they upgraded first.
Then post back with that info, and we’ll see what could be done.
I’ve sent in a question, and they haven’t replied yet (I use a great free host called Grinhost, with no ads). They’re using PHP version 4.4.4. I can probably get more information from cPanel if you let me know what to look for.
I think the problem is that WordPress isn’t given permission or can’t modify my files in my site. It can access MySQL stuff, so I’ve continued to blog and post new entries. However, I can’t change any template files or widget orders from my backend; I can only change those by using FTP.
Does this info help? I’ve tried a lot so far, and it all seems to point in this direction. I’m not an advanced user of Unix, but maybe it has something to do with granting permission to WordPress?
Update:
I sort of fixed it, or at least found something else useful. Whenever I change the number of text widgets from 4 to 1, I can make changes again. However, if I increase that number even to 2, it breaks again.
By “breaking,” I mean that when I click on save changes, it goes to my home page without changing anything, rather than the proper “Sidebar updated. View Site” notice in admin.
Is this any help?
