Can't delete permalink extension to create home page

I am trying to create my homepage. I added a new page and gave it a title. The permalink automatically adds the title as an extension after the .com. When I try to edit the permalink by deleting the extension it automatically adds some numbers as an extension. I created a menu and the only page in the menu is the one I created but when I view my site there is a blank home page at “mydomainname.com” and then the page I want as the home page is an additional page on the menu bar. How do I get rid of the blank page and make the page I want the home page at “mydomainname.com”?
