    Hi
I can only install or delete plugins through FTP
Whenever I do it through the backend I get the following message when I try to activate a plugin after upload “The plugin does not have a valid header.” When I try to delete I get this message “Plugin could not be deleted due to an error: Could not fully remove the plugin(s) my-plugin.php.”
Wordpress also couldn’t update to version 3.6.1 I had to do it through FTP, not sure if that’s connected. I’ve tried completely emptying the plugins folder & just installing one plugin but no success.
    Any thoughts please

  • There is a problem with the plugin that was originally uploaded. It may have been corrupted.

Go ahead and remove it through SFTP or FTP.

Are you able to install plugins through WP-admin –> Plugins –> Search?

Hi Lorenzo, thanks for the reply, it’s happening with all plugins & as I said before I’ve removed all plugins through FTP & I get the same message when I try & upload again through admin. I’ve checked the database, switched to the 2013 theme & did an update to 3.6.1 & the problem still remains, I’m stumped

It sounds like WordPress doesn’t have permissions set to allow the web server to write/remove files. (and it will need to do that to install/delete plugins and update WordPress)

Not knowing your hosting situation that’s about all I can offer, but it’s possible that it could be either the mode (chmod) or the ownership (chown) that’s the problem.

Thanks very much Scriptrunner. I’ve passed on your remarks to the hosting company’s tech support

I had FTP settings in my wp-config file, I disabled them & all is working fine now.
