I am installing wordpress for the first time. I've created a database in mysql. Added database info to the config file. Try to run the install through the browser and I keep getting "Error establishing a database connection.". I've done a $ ps -A to see what's running and mysqld is in the list. can anybody help me here?

After creating database, you don't add the db info into config file...

All u need is to point your site domain to
    http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin/install.php

Then, u fill up your db info like
    a) DB name
    b) DB username
    c) DB password
    d) Prefix - make sure don't use "wp_" use other prefix with alphanumerical for security purposes...

If u get error establishing connection when you go to the link (the one above)...then it may be issue with web hosting provider..contact them for more info then...

    @clickkt,

Personally i don't think it is necessary to create wp-config file manually...

Based on my personal experience, if the wp-config is not exist, WordPress will auto point user into

  5. http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin/install.php
  6. to start a new installation... :)

Thanks for all your suggestions. First of all I don't have a web host provider, I have set the ubuntu server up myself everything seems to be working well. I replaced the config file with one that had no changes to it to see if I would be prompted for the database info but I'm still getting the same error message.

You need a wp-config.php file filled out with the proper details: Editing wp-config.php « WordPress Codex.

Use PHPMyAdmin to check your database name and database create privledges. Once the wordpress installer can talk to the database, it will create tables.

Thanks for your help songdogtech I installed PHPMyAdmin as you suggested and eventually after much stuffing around I created a new database using the PHPMyAdmin and it connected. It really amazes me that there isn't a more friendly explanation of the install process. The 5 minute installer is fine if you don't have any problems. Anyway thanks again

Glad you got it working. The five minute install is really only for people getting web hosting somewhere with an already established database and other features offered by the hosting company. Setting up your own server gets a bit complicated; it took me a few tries back when I did the first time.

    dam waste of time

By pissing and moaning in two different threads, you've wasted lots of other peoples' time, too.

Have you checked your GoDaddy hosting control panel section for adminstering the MySQL database and looked for your correct MySQL server URL, i.e. in the form "h41mysql52.secureserver.net"?
