    Hi all,

I'm having a problem changing my home page URL. I want to change the homepage address from http://example.com/hard_to_remember_url to http://example.com/easy_to_remember_url. I've tried a couple of different methods from the Codex.

I tried simply changing the Blog address (URL) in the settings.

I then followed the instructions from giving wordpress its own directory.

I also tried changing the database through PHPMyAdmin following the changing the site URL instructions

Nothing seems to work. The funny thing is that the settings option changes the database and the database changes the settings option. It's just when visiting the new URL I get a 404 not found error. I have no idea what to do next.

Has anybody had a similar problem? Can anybody please point me in the right direction?

    Thanks.

I just had a problem. My CPANEL setup wordpress. I go to change the home page url as I thought I could change that so it goes back to my domain name the wordpress started from. So I took off the /wordpress folder from the url. Opps 404 not found, cant get back into admin to fix it.

After reading all the posts on this forum and most saying put it in your root directory YIKES, I hope you only run wordpress and not a web site too, just think, website, forum, wordpress and more all with index.php overwriting each other. No oginization so I not yet get that one where everybody from osCommerce to wordpress saying put it in your root, the htdocs/ What wrong with a folder to keep seperate and not run into problems? I new but not unfamiliar with programing and HTML, but whats with that anyways?

Anyways, all I simply did was to fix my problem was to put all the contenets of wordpress in my root then I could get back into my /wp-admin and not get a 404 not found since I changed it to my root domain name and not off folder, then changed it back the way it was from the folder http://www.domainname.com/wordpress and then moved the files again with FTP back to the /wordpress folder and all back to normal.

I hope that helps, as it was easy to do. Not sure, but it seems you could move your blog wordpress or others around that way too so you can get back into the admin and have it update the database or whatever.
