Support » Plugin: UpdraftPlus: WordPress Backup & Migration Plugin » Can't backup after moving host

    Hey David,

I’ve migrated to a new host but unfortunately, since moving over I can’t backup any more. I’ve changed the path within updraftplus to be a valid path and hitting the link to “create folder and test permissions” also comes back as successful. However, the backup button remains greyed out so I cannot run an on-demand backup. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Kev

Because it’s on a new host with a new file path everything is completely screwed up so it would be a lot easier if I could just delete updraft completely and re-install it. However, when I try to do so, my settings remain when I remove the plugin.

Looks like it’s a permissions issue with the folder that’s been created looking at the log entry below:

Failed to open log file (/public_html/refugeeks/wp-content/updraft/log.91ccafd779df.txt) – you need to check your UpdraftPlus settings (your chosen directory for creating files in is not writable, or you ran out of disk space). Backup aborted. (Mar 29 02:12:55)

Can you assist in completely removing Updraft and starting again please David?

    Thanks,

    Kev

    Hi Kev,

You’ll be pleased to know that in current versions, when options for the directory to use to store backups before dispatching them are saved, they are saved in a relative manner. So moving sites in future won’t have this issue.

The other question is answered here:

    Thanks David,

I’ve removed all settings and set everything back up. But the “Backup” button is still greyed out so I can’t run an on-demand backup.

I’ve just migrated another site to my new host and can see that the path seems to be working so thanks for that.

Any idea as to why the backup button is still greyed out on my main site?

I’m also still getting the same error as shown above. I’ve checked the permissions of /wp-content/updraft and they are 7-5-5 as they are on the site that works.

    Hi Kev,

The button is greyed out based upon the results of the PHP call is_writable upon the given backup directory. When you say that it is…

    /wp-content/updraft

… is that first slash there? If so, remove it so that it is just wp-content/updraft .

If it was just wp-content/updraft and if the permissions on that directory are 755 then try 775 – it may be that on your new host group-writable permission is needed (this happens if the files are owned by a unique ID for your user, but PHP runs as a shared user). When UpdraftPlus creates the directory itself if it it does not exist, it defaults to 775. So possibly you had 755 because that was your FTP client’s default setting when copying everything (wiping the settings doesn’t reset this – it only touches the database, not the filesystem; if you confirm that this fixes it then I should tweak that).

    Ok,

    I got it working…kind off.

What I did was remove all the settings (as explained above by David), then I removed the plugin as well and re-installed it. During the re-installation it setup the /wp-content/updraft and a backup started. I’ve checked my FTP server and I can see that the backup is working all except for the database, that doesn’t seem the have made it onto my server.

I can see the db backup on my webhost in /wp-content/updraft, but it isn’t on my FTP server.

Any idea why that hasn’t come across?

    Thanks,

Has it finished? If the database is still in wp-content/updraft and hasn’t been uploaded, then perhaps it’s not finished. But I can only really answer the question by seeing the backup log.

Yeah it’s saying that the backup completed today as 17:50 GMT. However, here is the last line of the log:

    FTP upload attempt: backup_2013-03-29-1755_RefuGeeks_04232e855c3f-uploads.zip -> ftp://kev@kevquirk.dyndns.org//disk1/HostingBackups/RefuGeeks/backup_2013-03-29-1755_RefuGeeks_04232e855c3f-uploads.zip (Mar 29 18:44:19)

I’ve also uploaded the complete log to here – http://pastebin.com/rKt2X5cN

In that log file, there’s no attempt to upload anything to the cloud at all.

    This line:
    0077.905 (0) Cloud backup selection:

Indicates that it was not aware of any setting to upload to the cloud. If something was set, then my next question would be whether you have W3 Total Cache’s object cacheing switched on? In present versions, that seems to make settings randomly disappear from various plugins.

This log file was the log file log.47be00cc28bb.txt from the backup with ID 47be00cc28bb (see the nonce= line near the top); the log line you print above is from 04232e88c3f (see the filename); so the log file for it would have been log.47be00cc28bb.txt.

Sorry David, I gave you the wrong log…duh!

Here is the right one – http://pastebin.com/RcexeikP

In that one it looks like the FTP upload times out – the upload is too big for the time allowed to PHP on your new host.

Update to the trunk version – http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/updraftplus.zip – that has chunked & resumable FTP uploading, as opposed to the one-shot FTP uploading that the current stable version has. That should fix it (that’s what chunked/resumable is for).

That worked perfectly. Thanks for the usual high level of support David!

Great – nice to have a confirmation beyond my own testing that that new code was working.
