Can't add "more" link to end of excerpts

This is probably easy to a lot of you but its driving me crazy trying to figure out how to successfully add the ‘more’ link to the end of excerpts on my front page

I was able to change the Main Index Template to correctly just show excerpts (changing the_content to the_excerpt) according to what I read here (Customizing the Read More) but maybe the code in my theme is configured differently because nothing is working…

I was hoping that I could get some help to fix this by providing my Main Index Template below:
