I followed all the instructions for creating a child theme according to http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes. But all instructions seem to skim over the "activate your new child theme" part. The child theme does not appear in the Manage Themes section. What am I missing?
Does your child them have its own, uniquely named, folder in wp-content/themes? Does it contain a style.css as outlined here?

One thought a week late-if you are using WP3 you need to activate the theme in the SuperAdmin panel before any sites can see the theme.

Thanks for your responses.
esmi: it does, i triple checked to make sure I did this step right.
Steve: I don't have a SuperAdmin panel, I think because I'm not running multiple sites...
Are you sure of this: "Make a new directory in wp-content/themes, and name it..." ??

Check where you have placed your child directory. It should be directly under THEMES and not below TWENTY TEN - I'm confident this is the error!
