   I activated akismet under plugins but when i go to click on the link to enter my API key the page just does not load, i then tried loading akismet/akismet.php manually and i get this error.

   Fatal error: Call to undefined function: add_action() in /usr/export/www/hosting/ardent11/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/akismet/akismet.php on line 11

   any ideas?

   Is this a recent install of WordPress? That's very odd. I'd make sure wp-admin and wp-includes folders are uploaded properly.

   yes only a couple of days old :)

   will re-uploading those folders alter any settings and such?

   I cannot load akismet either and when it asks for my api key I found I do not have one. It was not sent with my password-and now I do not know where how get it.

   butch1, i got my API key from when i had a hosted account with wordpress.com, so go there and make a hosted account and you will get an API key, click on "Options" and i think it's somewhere there. Hope that helps :)

   Anyway back to my problem, askimet doesn't load, any suggestions?

   I'd start with deleting the akismet piece from the web server and re-uploading a fresh copy. Make absolutely sure you're uploading in ASCII mode, not Binary.

   Is your web server apache or IIS?
