In wp-admin go to Apperance -> Editor
You can edit the files there. Only time you cant is when they are subfolders or some child themes. But most of the time you can edit them right in wp-admin as long as your permissions for folders are setup properly.
@wpbum: Appearance -> Editor
has nothing to do with updating WordPress or themes.
@aphdes: If you can’t update WP or install themes from the dashboard because WordPress is asking for your FTP info, that indicates a permission problem at your host. You can try adding FTP info to wp-config.php. If that still doesn’t work, check with your web host about your FTP credentials. See http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#WordPress_Upgrade_Constants
Ahh update not edit. Opps
Make sure these are set properly too

Thanks, I am trying to get that permission info from my hosting service. I don’t know how to add FTP info, or change file permissions. all this is over my head!
Who is your host? Do you have cPanel access? That has a built in file manager too.

Superb Internet and I’m not too happy with their WordPress support so far 🙁 I have something called Control Panel and phpMyAdmin but neither of them have anything about changing permissions.
