"You cannot upgrade because WordPress 3.0.3 requires MySQL version 4.1.2 or higher. You are running version 4.0.27."

This is the message I get after logging in as admin, and I can't get past it to my dashboard to try updating again or to post or to deal with comments.

How can I get to my dashboard?

Well . . . what version of MySQL are you running?

According the message, my webhost, Toast.net, is running 4.0.27. I have written to them to confirm this, but haven't heard back yet.

Toast.net should have a server status page or summary that tells what they are running - usually availble thru cpanel, vdeck or whatever interface they use but, it seems pretty clear they are not running the required version.

This is how to roll back to a previous version. It is dated but I believe correct in concept.

Yep. I looked all over for the MySQL version before emailing them. Couldn't find.

Thanks for the link. It justifies the uncomfortable feeling I had in the pit of my stomach--I thought it might come to a manual installation of the old version. Hoped I would never have to do that again.

I'll post again after trying this or a miracle happening, whichever comes first.

    Thanks again.

So, Toast.net moved my site to a different server that has the proper MySQL version. Voila! The WordPress blog finished updating all by itself!

Oh no! Then it immediately started generating spam from an unknown (to me) email: googlenews@textilefusion.com

Upgrading to WP 3.1 did not help. So after several days and no solution to the problem, they have moved me back to the old server and now I'm back at the old WP version and a stuck-in-the-middle-of-upgrading blog.

Is there any remedy for this rogue email address? Is it because of WordPress? I'd like to be able to tell them something that will get me back onto the upgraded server.

    Thanks, kmessinger!

Your site was sending out spam from the above address? That would not be a wp problem. The server they moved you to must be compromised in some way as it does not happen on the original server.

Saying that however, there are many errors on your home page, http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3a%2f%2fwww.textilefusion.com%2f and there is an error on the blog itself, http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3a%2f%2fwww.textilefusion.com%2fblog%2f, that prevents validation and maybe part of the upgrade problem.
