I am trying to install WP 3.1.1 on a newly installed Windows 2008 Virtual Dedicated Server R2 hosted by Godaddy. I have direct access to the server via RDC, so I don’t need to use FTP. I have downloaded, unzipped all the files to the domain subdirectory I created to host this blog. When I try to access the install.php file either through a browser on the server or through a browser on my desktop, I get a 500 Server Error. I could use the Windows WPI, Web Platform Installer or Plesk Control Panel, but it only appears to give me the option to install WordPress to the root directory of the domain and not into the \blog subdirectory, so I thought I would go the more difficult route and try to learn how to install this instead of just letting the auto installer do all the work.

    Here are the particulars:
    > Domain name: http://www.bocapalmbeach.com
    > Created a Subdirectory to install WP to: \blog
    > Installed PHP and MySQL
    > Created a MySQL db
    > Placed the WP files into the following directory:
    \inetpub\vhosts\bocapalmbeach.com\httpdocs\blog

    > Renamed wp-config.php file
    > Changed the MySQL settings to the appropriate db_name, db_user, db_password, db_host

    > Left db_host to ‘localhost’ at Godaddy’s suggestion, even though the main server hostname is ‘BocaPalmServer.secureserver.net’

    > Changed the Authentication Unique Keys in the wp-config.php

    > I am trying to access the install file with this url:
    http://www.bocapalmbeach.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php

I am logged into the server with the Admin login and I have not made any other changes to directory rights or anything like that within Windows and I am not using any third party firewall products that would prevent access to the server.

I have also verified that the following are running:
    MySQL 5.0.45
    PHP 5.2.13

I have tried to get help from Godaddy and Plesk, but no luck. It appears that they can only provide generic info on standard installations of WP.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

There must be permission problem recheck permissions.

    Thank you for your reply.

Not sure what permissions to check. I am able to access the readme.html file in the blog directory perfectly. When I copy the readme file to the wp-admin directory, I can view the readme file, but it is improperly formatted.

I’m just not sure which permissions need to be set and what to set them to. Is there a link to a page that can help me with that?

    Kind regards, Michael

I am not that used to window server but on linux folders are 755 and files are 644

So check if you wp-admin have permission along that line.

Thanks, but that doesn’t really help. I think I will try the Windows WPI. I’ve tried everything I know, Googled every possible variation and there’s no specific information as if I am the first person to use the setup and have this problem. I find that hard to believe, but I’ll try the other route and see if it installs. I guess then I can check settings and maybe see what I missed.

    Regards.

Why not use linux server as Go Daddy offers both.

Again, my thanks, but our website is being built using ASP.NET and must run on a Windows Server. I’m just trying to get a jump on the blog, by installing WP myself. I just tried the Windows automated way and received more errors, so I don’t think that way is going to work. I never thought it would be this much trouble trying to install WP on a Windows server, but I guess the fact that it is a virtual server on a Windows platform may have something to do with it.

I had one client who was using Rackspace that window based and he wanted to install wordpress and the way we ended up doing was create subdomain name and use linux for just wordpress worth checking if you can do that on GO Daddy.

Thanks govepatel, but I would prefer to resolve the issue at hand, rather than find a work-around. I found many others who have had this same/similar issue. This way, maybe I could provide some help to those who have the same/similar issue and save them some time and aggravation.
    Have a nice day..Michael
