cannot remove horizontal nav bar in twenty eleven theme

I’m using Twenty Eleven and want to remove the black navigation bar with the search bar, home and page links. I’ve looked through other posts regarding the same issue and tried what I could, but nothing worked to remove the bar completely. The most it did was remove the coloring, but the links were still there.
