  • I have a strange error in my wordpress blog. I got, for the first time, this error after I did some upgrade on my hosting server and I don;t understand how it is related to the server.

I’ll describe the error: I cannot log in my wordpress control panel if a specific theme is active. The blog is working fine, only the control panel doesn’t work. I see the login page, but after entering my user and pass I got a blank page (the source of that empty page has 3 empty rows).

Can, please, someone advice me how to solve this issue? I want to mention that I use for a long time the theme that generates me the error, and I got the error only after a hosting upgrade (I migrated my hosting from plesk to cp).

  • Where did you download this theme from?

I downloaded it from the internet, from the themes browser module included in WP admin panel.

    What is the theme called?

    This theme: http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/blogolife

but a older version, I did some changes on the theme (html changes) and I didn’t upgrade it to the last version.

What happens if you delete your customised version and upload the up to date version of that theme?

At this moment I don;t have access to wordpress CP, so I don;t know how to do this.

Switch to the Twenty Twelve theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides. That should get you back into your site’s admin area.

Thank you, esmi, I just did what you suggested and I regained control over my wordpress CP. Thank you.

I renamed the theme folder as you told me and I could log in. I (re)downloaded the theme and everything works fine. Thank you for your help. I just don;t understand why a theme blocks the CP.

Is there, in wordpress, any log file where I can understand what happened?

Your hosts might be able to point you towards your site’s error logs which may help to identify your earlier problem. WordPress itself does not create an error logs unless specifically configured to do so – although it’s not something I would generally recommend doing for a live site.

FWIW, a theme can stop WordPress in its tracks – including access to the admin area – if the error is severe enough. The front & back end of a site are not mutually exclusive but are just two parts of a single application. So one bad error anywhere can throw everything out.
