[resolved] Cannot insert image into post or page from Media Library (15 posts)

I used to be just fine inserting images into my posts and pages via the standard WP media library. I have not installed any new plugins or anything since this was working (I don't think). Now, when I'm in a page or post (same thing regardless of which), I can click "insert" and it shows me all the images in my media library, but I can't click the "Show" link next to any of them - it just does nothing. Therefore, i can't insert any of the images into the posts. Help! Any ideas? Everything is up to date...

BTW, this is a multisite install that's been working perfectly for a few weeks now. The problem is NOT occurring on the main site; only on one of the additional sites.

Any plugins on that sub-site that aren't on all the others?

I don't think so, but I deactivated all Plugins just to test and had no luck...same problem. I've tried different browsers in case it was a random issue that was NOT wordpress. I went into the plugins folder via FTP and removed all empty folders from old/deleted plugins. I DO have a separate domain name for this site, but I'm access it all through multisitename.mainsitename.com, so I don't think it's a routing glitch.

Any other ideas of what to try? Or any other info that would be helpful?

    Have you tried:

    - switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    - resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    - re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.

    @esmi -
    - yes
    - yes
    - no, because this is a multisite installation and all of the other sites are working perfectly. I don't want to make any changes that might potentially break the other blogs.

The only thing I can think of that I did between when I know this was last working and when I noticed it was no longer working is I tried to upload a photo that was too big (didn't realize it), but of course WP just failed the upload. I went to insert another photo (already in the library) after that and realized I couldn't. Could there be some obscure counter or something that I need to reset related to the media? Or can I someone reinitalize the media library without wiping it out to start over?

re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.

That will, in no way shape or form break your site (unless you've edited core files). It's safe as houses.

There is no counter for a failed upload.

re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.

I worded that badly. I wasn't so much concerned with "break the site" as just that I don't see the benefit if the other sites are all working as expected, since they all pull from the same setup files ...

I'll give it a shot, just not overly confident that will fix the issue

What are the user permissions for that account on that site? Are they the same as on other sites?

Yes, all the permissions are the same (and haven't been changed since the last time it was all working).

May have to just restore from my last backup point and hope that fixes the issue

LOL np. We have since restored the entire multisite structure (all sites) from a backup and I am still having issues with just this one site...the others work fine. My user role is a Super Admin for everything; would it help to try with a user with less privileges?

The only other difference I can think of between this subsite and all the others is that I was trying to upload some media files via FTP at one point. I had installed a plugin that allowed me to upload the files (photos) via FTP and then import them into the media library. I have since removed the plugin, all files associated with the plugin, all photo files I uploaded via FTP, AND restored the site from backup to a time PRIOR to even attempting any of that - could THAT still be making a difference?

Thanks so much for bearing with me on this - annoying issue!! I guess I could create a new, fresh subsite and recreate my entire blog, but UGH! what a lot of work :(

UPDATE - Ok, after I did a full website reinstall from backup, I went into the Network panel and "Updated Network" to update all the sites. I can now insert media into posts and pages (!!) from IE. Still doesn't work from Chrome, but hey, I'll take what I can get.

I still don't know what caused this issue to start with, but I suspect it had something to do with trying to FTP files and then insert into the media library (even though I had installed a plugin that was supposed to let me do exactly that)
