Cannot add new media since 3.8 upgrade (19 posts)

    Hi,

Like many others, since I have upgraded to 3.8 I now cannot add any new media. It appears to load a new image but then it is blank in the library.
I have tried switching out the plug ins and re-installing 3.8 and switching the plug ins back on and it is the same. I am using the Mantra template.

Any advice for a basic user please ?

    Mike

I'm having the same issue as riskdude but I'm with Bluehost and the problem is different than the solution above.

Getting a 500 Error - server misconfigured when I try to upload an image. The images won't upload unlike the GoDaddy example from esmi just above where the images did upload but couldn't be used. Mine just don't appear at all in either method of uploading.

Text goes up fine. I've also disabled and renabled all plugins. Turned off the StudioPress theme to run the WP 2013 theme. (with plugins disabled and enabled) No difference. Turned plugins back on - no difference with either theme.

I'm not a server-guy by any stretch of the imagination and I do have a request into Bluehost for suggestions.

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

I get no errors at all, just a filename where the images in the library should be. I'm not sure what the relevance of the go daddy example above is as I am not using them and do not get server errors ?

You did not mention who you were hosted with and we've has multiple reports of very similar issues on GD hosted sites. Can we have a link to a publically accessible page that contains one of these "missing" images?

Ok I see, thanks. I am hosted with Tsohost. All of the images on the website (uptonrc.org.uk) are working fine because these were all loaded into the media library before the upgrade. The problem I have is that I cannot add any new images which you can only see happen from within the dashboard.

    Have you tried:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    - resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    - re-uploading all files & folders - except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files - from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    Yes, no change.

No, can I switch the theme over and back without messing up the pages ?

No, I am a basic user and have no idea how to do this.

No, i'm sorry but again I don't know how to do this and would be concerned with the risk of messing the site up.

Any changes will be only temporary.

Please see the page at the link I posted above.

again I don't know how to do this

You will need to use FTP or whatever file management application your host provides. There's nothing we can do for you from here.

I can see that the help riskdude (or me) is getting here is equal to no help. My problem is the same, cant add any images to posts, pages or products after t he update. All the things suggested are (talking for me now) not what you want to do. I have a web-shop based on wordpress and the proposed "solutions" above would seriously affect both security, perfomance and potential purchases.
This is really serious problem and should not be handled like this! Please help us investigate or tell us more how to test or rollback without jeopardizing our business/blogs/reputation.

    Dan,

In the end I had to get my hosting company to fix this. They went through the suggestions made above without success and then told me that they "changed the upload path via the database" which fixed it - although I have no idea what that meant!

I have to agree that this is not at all satisfactory and took a lot of effort from me to resolve.

    Good Luck

    Thanks Mike,

That makes sense even though I have no idea where to look myself. I will have a chat with my hosting to see if they understand what to do based on that.

    Good luck to you too

Basically same problem. All the media (a lot as we're running Royal Slider) disappeared from view in Media Library, but all exist looking in cPanel File Manger.

But, in my case on a VPS via ServInt, Inc., with all up-to-date installation items, I CAN load New Media and then set it up inside the slider and it functions.

But all links are lost to anything prior to the update to 3.8.

The linkage has all been lost in Media Library. Yes I did all the plugin tests and about 4 hours more solid work in .htaccess files and any security issues. I do understand the above, but have not yet gone to the database to reset all of the upload paths via cPanel > phpMyAdmin if that is what the hosting company did above.

Will report back on pathway reset only if it works.

I maintain only two other blogs that use uploaded media. Both are on older themes, but the /wp-admin/options-media.php file page you get when you click on Settings >> Media are different.
One blog has never been set on "Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders" and the settings include:
Store uploads in this folder wp-content/uploads [in a text box]
Full URL path to files http://domainofsite/blog/wp-content/uploads/ [in a text box]

This would help for a one-folder file upload area for a low-volume site.

I had the same/similar problem. In WP 3.7, the images I had been uploading were 1000px square, and never more than 1MB. This worked fine.

After upgrading to 3.8, the files needed to be MUCH smaller (100px square) in order to successfully upload.

I raised the server's php.ini "memory_limit" from 32MB to 64MB and restarted Apache. This totally solved the problem.

This is what helped us: http://wordpress.org/plugins/change-uploaded-file-permissions/#post-2390
The correct file permission for media items seems to be 644.

Thank you Esmi, your instructions to:

"re-uploading all files & folders - except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files - from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones"

    resolved my issue. Much appreciated!

I followed all your instructions ... in my case the problem was caused by Wysija MailPoet Newsletters. I can''t undersand why ...

    @grafite and @all:

MailPoet was the culprit with me as well.

I deactivated, deleted and reinstalled MailPoet and now the media button works again.

I think the problem is with the upgrading of previous versions of MailPoet because every time I update another plugin MailPoet also updates as well. Very strange indeed.

Please send a mail to MailPoet support as well to indicate that they have a serious issue!
