I would narrow the site down to the content width, and move the 'recent posts' links to the top and bottom horizontally aligned - unless you expect to get a lot of those links.

The content body is good, but the side background contrast is too strong to me, hurting my eyes. What if you can add a background tile image, to minimize that? I've found some sites using the backgrounds here:
