   I of course use my wordpress API key for Akismet for my websites, but sometimes I'll build a site for a friend and I usually feel inclined to have them create their own WordPress.com account and get their own API key.

   I guess I don't really understand the true purpose of the API key. Should I only use it on sites I own, or is it ok if I use my key on other peoples sites?

   Sites that are yours, using your one API key on them is fine.

   Sites that belong to others that you are helping with, they should get their own API key.
