Can you change a main theme into a child theme? (2 posts)

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I'm needing to update a theme I've been using for quite some time on an old site. Unfortunately, I neglected to set up a child theme for this site.

Would it be possible to change the current theme to a child theme and simply install the updated theme after? That way my edits would be preserved.

    Thank you

I've never tried this before. I think there's no harm in trying. However, 1) back up your old theme, you never know; 2) if the old theme is really old and contains such things as deprecated WP functions and such like, then your best course of action, in my view, is to change theme and add the necessary modifications to a fresh child theme.
