• Hello my dear friends!

I’ve been using WordPress for multiple blogs and think it’s a great flexible solution with a most amazing community.

Now, I was wondering if I could also use WordPress for the following concept:

I’d like to create a website where people can register and post a short story and an image. Other folks have the opportunity to rate the post and comment on it.

I already found a great ratings-plugin (http://www.lesterchan.net/portfolio/programming.php) and I’m now exploring the options for the rest.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to realize the rest of this concept?

As said, I’m a great fan of WordPress and would like to use it instead of a heavy and seo-slow cms. Thanks for all comments!

  • It sounds like that what you’re after, WP does straight out of the box. An article is a post which contains an image.

I’m sort of wanting to do the same thing. I’m helping to plan my ten year HS reunion for this summer, and I’d like to have a page setup in WordPress where people can enter some information about themselves and upload a picture via a simple form on a page. I know they can register and post stuff that way, but I am not sure how easy it would be for someone who has never used WordPress to get everything figured out as soon as they register. I suppose I could create a page of fairly detailed instructions, but I would just as soon make it easier if possible. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Well, as a contributor, basically they’ll have two options when they log in: “Dashboard” and “Write”.

Quite honestly, if you knew you were registering to a site so you could write a little blurb about yourself, which link would you click on? 😉

    It’s pretty self-explanatory.

If you want to see for yourself, then create a new user and set them as a contributor. Then log in as the contributor. You’ll see exactly what they will.

If you *still* think they need instructions, it’s *very* easy to place some in there – I do it for clients all the time.

Thank you all for your replies!

I’m aware of the existence of the different user levels, and the possibilities they offer to contribute to the creation of content.

However, I’m looking for a more extensive profile-kind-of-thingy, where users can upload avatars, enter more detailed personal information and create content (even) more easy..

I’ll continue searching myself, and suggestions and ideas or tips for handy plug-ins are of course more then welcome, thanks in advance!

Well, as for uploading avatars, and such like that, Andy Staines has a great forum plugin; I’m using it for some story posting and text roleplay, and some of the functionality I asked him for that he was able to include in it would do what you’re looking for I believe.

Get it here: Simple Forum Note that you’ll need to use the contact form to have Andy send it to you as it’s not yet an open beta or a release version.

1.8 IS a beta; however, I’ve been using it long enough to break it if it were going to break, and it hasn’t. It’s pretty damn slick, actually!

polle, i am working on the same thing – wish it was 10-year though 😉

    1) registration = user level – there is a plug for that. but i can’t find a plug yet. i am guessing you are looking for = register and supply contact info so you wind up with a phone book and have privileges to write posts, etc. i bought a book on php/mysql that explains how to make a custom capability for this. i am not quite the programming expert but am getting there damn quick trying to solve simpler issues. ;-O

    2) writing/posting = right now i am concluding i have to write a static page and/or pdf download with full instructions how to write/upload images/video/audio, etc.

now my site is up and i am trying to get the reunion team to write something for testing but after four days no one is venturing forth yet.

    I just found a registration plug = http://butlerblog.com/wp-members/

and one that adds extra information for registered users = http://dev.wp-plugins.org/wiki/Userextra

    sorry, can’t rate them yet…
