[resolved] Can retrieve Akismet API key on new blog installation (4 posts)

I have just setup my first WordPress 2.6.1 blog on an Ihosts webserver. It wasn't 5 minutes, but I got it to work on the first try. My problem is that I can not, for the life of me, get the API key to complete the activation of the Akismet plugin.

My admin profile does not show an API key like the WordPress FAQ page shows it should. If I click on the link to get the API key, I am taken to a WordPress page with no meaningful information about the API key. In fact, the entire body of the web page I am taken to is blank, except for the WordPress Header info which also contains a few links, but no info on the API key.

I have tried this in both Firefox 3 and Opera 9.52 with the same results. I am using Ubuntu Linux 8.04 if that makes any difference (which I doubt).

The WordPress FAQ on this question is confusing because it suggest that the API key should already be visible on my Admin profile page (it is not). I have also read that this API key is supposed to arrive in the initial email that provids my username and password (it did not).

How in the world do I obtain this key? The only thing my profile tells me is that "Akisment is almost ready ... enter the API Key." I feel like a dog chasing its tale.

    Thanks for some help.

You have to signup for a WordPress.com account (even if you do not plan to use it) to get an Akismet key.

    Info here: http://wordpress.com/api-keys/

WordPress.com (as opposed to WordPress.org) is a site where you can register a free (basic) WordPress blog. As I mentioned, you don't have to actually set one up there, just create an account to get your API key mailed to you.

I have the same problem as Rizlaw, but none of these tips are helping me. I have a self-hosted blog. I activated Akismet, but I need an API key. I went to wordpress.com, made an account. The email sent to me only has a password, not an API key. I logged into wordpress.com, checked out my profile page there, and nothing. Went back to my admin page on my own blog, and nothing.

Has this happened to anyone else?
