   I want to download a theme then create my website without uploading to wordpress or another host just yet - I just want to design the site on my laptop in readiness for a later upload to my work intranet. is this possible? how do I do it?

   You'd have to install WordPress locally on your laptop.

   You can use MAMP for Mac or XAMMP for windows.

   Sorry but I'm a complete novice at this. What is XAMMP? Any idiot proof steps I can take ?

   XAMMP is a tool to let you turn your PC into a web-server. It installs Apache, PHP, and SQL, which you need to run a site on your PC.
