Can I set a separate URL slug for posts only? (1 post)

With custom post types, we can get different types of posts, each with their own URL structure, like http://mydomain.com/projects/a-project-name or http://mydomain.com/books/atlas-shrugged. So how about if I want the blog section of my site to have its own URL, so that blog posts become http://mydomain.com/blog/2011/12/my-first-blog-post? If I put 'blog' into the permalinks structure in settings, then I get 'blog' in front of all my URLs, including those for projects and books, which I don't want of course.

Is there a way to do this, other than by creating a new custom post type called 'blog' which is exactly the same as a post?
