I have a question. I am running backups on all my WP installations, and I’d like to know if I can safely delete all of the “stock” WordPress themes that come with a fresh installation of WordPress? Do they really need to be there or is there some security risk if I delete them? As of right now, they’re simply bloating my backups, and yes, backup space really does matter. Thanks in advance!

  • The theme itself does not use that much you would probably be better cleaning up the database, you can truncate certain tables to save space or use a plugin, I have not used this myself I have a manual cleanup but this seems to do the job WP-Clean_UP

My opinion is to delete them, incase you need them in future you can always just download them and ftp them to the themes folder.

If you mean theme directories such as twentyeleven and twentytwelve I wouldn’t. In the event of a Bad Thing™ happening having one of those can be a real life saver.

If you mean other unused themes (some hosts install a ton of themes by default) then deleting those should be fine.
