i have a massive blog, hundreds of posts, thousands of comments, and i'd like to have a mirror of it in my laptop so i can use it as a resource when i'm travelling and away from net access (imagine... no web access).

i can get the .dmp files my server offers as backups, or use the phpmyadmin backup to get backup files, what i need to know is, what do i have to do to run a mysql database server on my laptop, what environment do i have to set up wordpress in my laptop, how would i open it, etc.

if it helps to know how clueless i am, i'm pretty geeky, at least i managed the install and various other bits of fairly complicated setup by myself, but i don't know where to start with this problem.

Try http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html - installs a local webserver with apache, mysql, and phpmyadmin all playing nice together.

I've been using XAMPP for the last 4 years or so, on both desktop and laptop. Only problem I ever have with wp locally is that if I download a db dump without remembering to disable plugins then load the dump into the localhost db, I won't get anything but a blank page when I access the blog. Don't know what it is about that....

Do you have linux on your laptop ?
I'd try LAMP if you do have linux.

I just installed xampp on my Christmas present laptop and it is great! Nice and easy installation only a couple of blank stares at the machine... lol
