Well I'd hazard a guess that he has permalinks enabled, and he made a page then inside that page (/archives - a post slug, right?) he wrote out each month with their links using get_archives().

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this an application of Justin Blanton's SmartArchives?

see, I wasn't sute and I couldn't find an example showing that it was. If anyone can show me that it really is the same as what I'm talking about that would be great.

blog.geminigeek.com uses this template, which has an Archives page template: http://blog.geminigeek.com/archives/2005/06/wp-theme-cherry-berry/

You will need a theme that has an Archives page template to create an archives page. Or, you could dissect any theme's archives page template and attempt to create your own.

Here is a tutorial on how to make an archive template that uses Smart Archives, including the CSS.
