I hope this is the right forum to post this question!
My site deals with Real Estate. Sometimes I will want to post on the topic ECONOMY, which can be a Subcategory of the Category NEWS; but it is also appropriate as a Subcategory of the parent Category VALUE, since the Economy affects Real Estate Values!
Am I thinking about WordPress clearly here?
Can two or more different parent Categories have the same child Subcategory?

I think you want the POST to have several categories.. Which is possible.
When you write a post, just check off all the categories you want the post to appear in.
As far as I know, having multiple parents for a category is not possible.

You could also create Subcategories that have almost identical names, like "Economy" under NEWS and "The Economy" under REAL ESTATE VALUES, and check off the appropriate ones when writing the post, as Tosak said.

This really has me confused! Interestingly, WordPress codex, below, doesn't even use the name "Subcategory". It does talk about Categories having Parents, but it doesn't refer to them as Subcategories.

It goes on to say:
"Each post in WordPress is filed under one or more Categories. This aids in navigation and allows posts and to be grouped with others of similar content.
Each Category may be assigned to a Category Parent so that you may set up a hierarchy within the Category structure. In creating Categories, recognize that each Category Name must be unique. Thus, even if two Categories have two different Parents, they must still have different names."
I must have read that,
"even if two Categories have two different Parents, they must still have different names."
fifteen times. It is having a hard time sinking in!
