Caffeine Counter on Sidebar? (9 posts)

Ok I know there must be a way to do this, but I have searched and am at a loss. What I would like to do is add content to my sidebar such as Cups of Coffee today: x and Miles Run today: x, where x is a variable I define. However I would like to be able to update this variable from the admin area as I would do for links, etc. rather than having to go in and edit the code of the sidebar every day. Are there any plugins out there that do something similar to this? Or even built-in WP functionality that I am missing?
    Thanks.

You're no relative of mine if you're a health nut! ;-)

I suggest you look into a plugin called miniblog.

The miniblog asks for a "Blog Identifier" which is basically a tag or category. You can have as many as you want, each driving a different section (coffee, running, etc.). Then use the code to place each category of output where you want it. You can style it however you wish, as you can see from the example below.

See the example on the sidebar, where I use it to list New Members, Expiring Members and Upcoming Events.

Thanks for the info, looks like it will work perfectly. Man, it sure is weird when someone with the same last name and from the same place in which I lived for 15 years replies to my message.

I just found this plugin in another thread. He says you can use it to keep track of cigarettes smoked, coffee drank, etc. Sounds like it's right up your alley!

I looked at that plugin, and can't figure out how to get the admin feature to work. I uploaded the admin "plugin" to the wp-admin directory, and the plugin portion to the plugin directory, as well as clicked on the link to create the table. Nothing but blank screens. The source returns <html><body></body></html>
The author links are dead, so unless you are really adventerous, I wouldn't recommend playing around with it. That is, unless someone has more info.

Open the plugin in a text editor and I bet you'll find there's an extra space (or space) at the beginnong or the end of the file. The blank screen syndrome is a common result of this error.

I have it installed but rather than blank screens I get:

Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /home/mueller/public_html/wp-admin/mystuff.php on line 107

whenever trying to call the wp-admin portion of the script. This happens even when trying to create the table.

    Grrrrr...

No, it's not white space issues. Usually the white space will give an error, from my experience. The other issue is that the link to the wp-admin file is assuming your install is in root, and not a sub directory. So that has to be edited as well. The version was left at .2, so obviously there were plans to do more... if there was a plugin guru out there, this would be a good project to pick up and finish. Move the admin file to an options page, streamline the install, etc. As it is, if you get it working, and need to upgrade, you have to copy and move the admin file.
