BuddyPress Activity Plus
[resolved] [closed] buddypress activity plus image "preview" NOT showing in activity stream (31 posts)

I have buddypress installed on one of my websites (adult)that is using a Network. I currently have BPAP activated on (2) of my sites. This is what happens when attempt to upload the following:

    1.Images-Uploads with no issues.
2.GIF's-They upload fine, but do NOT show in the activity stream. It only shows a little "dot" where the picture "preview" should be. When I click the little "dot" the GIF opens fine, but it always shows a "preview" in the feed right after I post a GIF.
I have this plugin installed on another one of my websites and it works just fine. Could you help me troubleshoot my issues?
-I de-activated ALL my plugins and that did not work.
-I deleted it completely from my server and uploaded a fresh install and that didn't work.
-I installed a previously released version of the plugin and that didn't work.
I am hopeless at this point. Any insight would be great!
Thank you in advance for your time.
    Love, Peace and Hair grease

This is odd, I can't reproduce this. GIFs upload fins to my BuddyPress site and appear in the stream exactly as they should.

You say it's working on one site but not another. Is there any obvious difference between the two sites that could suggest why they differ?

Also, is there any connection to the specific images you are trying to upload? Have you tried uploading images that work on one site to the site that isn't working to rule out image corruption and issues with MAX_UPLOAD_SIZE settings etc?

I'm just trying to narrow down what we're looking for by eliminating anything I can think of.

    Happy Friday Ellbristow!

Just to update you my original request. I noticed you are a part of the WPMUDEV Community, I am as well. I originally posted this issue in our Community forum first. Here is the original thread of this issue. Again, love the plugin, love the Community,

AHA! Thanks for that link... and it looks like Jack has covered my next wave of questions too! :)

It's probably best to contain the discussion to one thread, so if it's OK with you I'll let Jack take care of you in-house?

I have no problem working with Jack, I created this thread when I didn't hear back from him. I have a time sensitive situation which is why I reached out for the help initially. I just wish I had a confirmation that there ARE issues with the plugin and I can sit tight for a solution. (Instead of wasting time troubleshooting) I kinda created my whole site around guys being able 2 upload GIFs, I have updated my member site and cannot approve my users to the new remodeled site until the Activity Plus thing is figured out. I wanted to use a temporary substitute but I cant seem to find one out there.

  7. GIF images have always been a bit troublesome... not in this plugin in particular, but in general.
A workaround would be using a similar to this one to convert your images to something other than .gif : http://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/57221/convert-uploaded-png-to-jpeg-automatically

    Cheers,

    Hello there!!
Thank you for replying. Actually I have always been able to upload GIFs thats pretty much what I used my activity feed for is to post GIF images in certain groups. When they see the moving pic preview in the activity feed, it makes them wanna join the group. But a lot of people are having this issue, recently. I am not sure if it has something to do with the latest update of Buddypress, but it seems it started happening around that time. I notice in the forums other are "recently" having the same problem. I tested this plugin on a fresh installation of wordpress and had the same problem.
any help or suggestions would be appreciated

  9. This issue is also posted here: http://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/buddypress-activity-plus-image-preview-not-showing-in-activity-stream
please continue this issue there so that the info is not fragmented in many places and we can figure this out faster. :)

    Cheers,
    Ari.

    Cheers Community!

I originally posted this request in the Community Forum, because I am a Elite member of the WPMUDEV Community. I did NOT receive any feedback, so I decided to post on WordPress.org because I needed immediate attention for my Members website that relies on GIF posting.
After receiving a response from one of the staff of WPMUDEV, stating keep my original thread open with the WPMUDEV Community. Which if you read the other thread, I replied stating I would.
Now weeks later... (problem unresolved) your telling me WHERE i need to handle my issue. If I was a WPMUDEV staff member I would have handled the issue regardless of where is was posted, because the plugin is created by WPMUDEV.
With that being said. I love WPMUDEV! I love the quality products available and the vibe that I get from the Community and Staff. But I'm really disappointed that the WPMUDEV staff is now literally shoving me around the room saying "I don't wanna do it.. no I'm not going to do it!" and at the end of the day and all the cries out for help, not just from me, but from other WPMUDEV members and users are not being answered.
So now what should I do??
Stop using the plugin all together? Give up the hope that my Community can solve problems for me?
Considering all the Staff members that have ran across my post in both places and have not supplied me with support to my issues, but support on "how to post my issues", am I to assume no one knows the answer?

    distressed and obsessed with wordpress

  11. If I was a WPMUDEV staff member I would have handled the issue regardless of where is was posted, because the plugin is created by WPMUDEV.

I never said that we won't solve your issue because you posted here, all I said was that it's best if the issue is not fragmented in many places. We'got some info on your issue here, some more info on the same issue there, and many people dealing with the same thread in 2 different sites. That doesn't seem efficient at all to me... hence my proposal of continuing the conversation there. At least this way we'll know what's happening!
Of course the plugin is created by WPMUDEV and of course we'll help you out any way we can. It's simply a matter of handling things as efficiently as possible. We've got people posting issues on our forums, on wordpress.org, even on stackexchange! Keeping things in one place would make things a lot easier.

I'll have to disagree with that statement. As I explained above, the reasons for my post were not these.

Now, on to the question at hand...
On the other thread on the forums, my last post 2 days ago was this:

Could you please upload your gifs somewhere so that I may test this on my installation with your images and figure out what's happening?

Unfortunately you never replied to that.
We're trying to figure out what's going on and what could be wrong here. However, as we cannot replicate this issue, it would be useful if we tried it with the actual files that you're trying to upload.
In order to debug this issue, we must first encounter it and find out what's happening!

    Cheers,
    Ari.

    Good Morning Ari!

Thanks for replying. I understand what your saying regarding where to post. But when you are go a long period of time with no reply, you start going other places. And I had NO idea that posting a issue in two different places would cause such issues when a link to the other thread is connected in every post. WordPress.org and WPMUDEV have two different domains. This plugin is offered on a FREE site and a PREMIUM site. Any person in a emergency situation would attempt to maximize their chances of success by posting in both places the plugin is listed. WordPress.org has a different set of users who could possibly supply a answer to my problem. In my experience of needing support for a plugin/theme on any site, other members have solved my issues before staff could get to it. In my case I don't care who solves the issue, I am just crying out for "HELP". I think my steps were very "efficient", considering I have gotten so many replies regarding where to post more than answers on my issues. The crazy thing is that every single person that has answered this thread gets a notice in their e-mail box, and yet still NO ONE i previously poured my entire issue out to has responded.. Is that efficient? But again, no disrespect to the WPMUDEV community, I'm just expressing how I feel.

    Now back to business!
As noted in the previous threads, my website is adult. So in respecting the community, GIFs or the website link cannot be posted here.
Also noted in the previous threads, I have tested this plugin on the following:
    1. Fresh installation of WordPress on a brand new site (hosted on GoDaddy) with NO other plugins installed. (did the same thing)This website is a Multisite website.
    2. I have a EXACT replica website of the one BAP first start giving me issues on and the GIFs post just fine. The only difference from the replica website and the website I'm having the issues with is Buddypress is only functioning on 1 blog. (Multisite is setup)
    3. Tried posting GIFs under 1mb. These items did show in the activity stream (as a preview)

I have also posted my .htaccess code because I was asked to by a another staff member (in previous threads)

I'm wondering if it has something to do with having BAP on multiple blogs in the network? Because I never had this problem before I installed Buddypress on multiple blogs on my network.

I hope this helps. Thanks for your time and attention. Have a beautiful day

    @wpmudev
Hello, I just wanted to update you on this issue. I have still not been able to get the preview thumbnail to work with this plugin. I have done the following:
    1. Installed the latest version of WordPress 3.7.1
    2. Installed the latest version of Buddypress 1.8.1
    3. Installed the latest version of Buddypress Activity Plus
    4. Deleted ALL other plugins, except for Buddypress and Activity Plus.
    5. Using the Default Buddypress Theme.
I have been trying to get assistance with this plugin for a long time. It has become very frustrating trying to figure out the issue with this plugin. I would alittle insight thank you for your time

Hope your well today and thanks for the additional information.

Looks like your using quite a old version of WordPress, both BuddyPress 1.8.1 and also Buddypress activity plus are made for the latest version, could you upgrade please?

    Thanks!

Hi there Jack! Yes my day is well! Thank you so much for the kind wishes. I hope your Turkey day will be filled with family and fun.

Yes I seen that you posted a picture. GIF's are actually the files I have problems with. When I am using WordPress 3.4.2 and Buddypress 1.6.5, I am able to upload a gif and see the thumbnail in the activity feed.
As I previously posted, all other formats fine except gif files, which is a major component of my website. I uploaded a gif. on the website to give you a example of how even though it posted, the thumbnail is not visible, but if you hover over the botton left-hand corner of my posting, you will see the hand alert you where the thumbnail should actually be.

Thank you so much again for your time. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

    Hi there @neat_geek,

Hope your well today and thanks for the additional information.

On my test site I'm not having issues with the GIF's. but I did notice you said

When I am using WordPress 3.4.2 and Buddypress 1.6.5

They're both extremely outdated now, I tested with BuddyPress 1.8.1 and WordPress 3.7.1, would it be possible for you to upgrade at all?

    Thank you!

    Kind Regards
    Jack.

    Hi Jack!

I hope your Thanksgiving was well. Ok here is a clear rundown of what is going on, so you can understand my current issues.

    1. The website I created for YOU to have access to is updated with the currently software:
    -Buddypress 1.8.1
    -Wordpress 3.7.1
In the previous thread you sent me, you requested me to update to the current version of WordPress, which I did. This website, I currently cannot use all of the Buddypress Activity Plus functions.

    2. The ONLY website I AM able to use Buddypress Activity Plus on, without ANY issues is:
    -Buddpress 1.6.5
    -Wordpress 3.4.2
I have to use the versions listed in order to use ALL of Buddypress Activity Plus functions.

The website I requested you to look at has a POSTED listed example of the error. If you review the previous (2) activity post I added and read the note of instructions with it, you will be able to test the error I am having with Buddypress Activity Plus. This way, you can better understand what I mean regarding my issues with GIFS.

Does this plugin work with my current upgraded components of Buddypress and WordPress? No, they currently upload the GIF, but do not show the thumbnail of the GIF in the activity feed. If you hover over the EMPTY space below the message accompanying the gif, you will see the image is click-able, but again no thumbnail is presented.

I hope I have been able to help you better understand my issues. Thank you again for all your time, testing and observation.
    Have a beautiful da!

    Happy New Year Jack!

I was just checking in on the update process. On WordPress.org it says Buddypress Activity Plus is only compatible with WordPress 3.5.1. Is this true? Do you think the update will be released within the next few months?

Thank you again for all your time and efforts. I would just like to know if this component should be removed from my website until further notice or...?

It is remained to update On WordPress.org and it will be updated but it doesn't mean it won't work on latest version of WordPress. What it means is it is tested up to that WordPress version.

Just use it and let us know if you face any problem as we're here to help you.

Do you think the update will be released within the next few months?

Sorry but We don't publish ETAs to prevent disappointment if a deadline is missed(which in plugin development quite a frequent occurrence!).

Thank you again for all your time and efforts. I would just like to know if this component should be removed from my website until further notice or...?

Which component are you talking about?

I have been trying to get help with this issue as a Premium member for 9 months now. All I get are dead ends, lost hopes and people telling me where in fact this or that should be posted in the forum. It's extremely frustrating when your entire site revolves around the functionality of this plugin and yet, no SUPPORT from my Premium community. You marked my issue resolved without looking to see IF my issue was resolved. It's very upsetting when we pay our money for no resolution. I have 19 membership websites that use Buddypress, and the main activity function is not functional. It seems the only thing anyone cares about is how LONG a issue is marked open. This version is NOT compatible with WordPress 3.8.1 and Buddypress 1.9. Per the website it is compatible up to WordPress version 3.5.2. What is the deal guys?
    Very unhappy WPMUDEV premium member.
