Hello:
My questions are as follows:
1. Is Buddypress only for WPMU?
2. If not, is the download a different product for a regular WP installation/blog? Or is it just certain plugins or a certain theme that applies to a single user installation?
3. If Buddypress is only for WPMU, does WPMU cost anything? Or could I install it same as a stardard WP site?
I'm finding only limited information about this so I'm a bit confused. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Yes (so far).

Skipping this one.

WPMU is free GPL'ed software just like WP. Install WPMU anyway you like.
From the BuddyPress readme.txt in the download zip file:
== Installation ==
BuddyPress requires WordPress MU, it will not work on a single install of WordPress (yet).
See http://buddypress.org/about/requirements/ for info. You might also want to visit http://buddypress.org/forums/ too.
For WPMU info give http://mu.wordpress.org/ a look.
