Brand new install. Followed steps closely. Checked work. Uploaded WP to new Laughingsquid domain root dir using Filezilla. Firefox finds root, but gives 404 when directed to install.php file. Error msg says "The requested URL /wp-admin/install.php was not found...". Sorry for such a basic error but I'm new to this stuff. Site is http://www.mralancooper.com.

Have you checked that the wp-admin folder exists and is populated via FTP?

Yes. I just checked again. The full directory tree and all files are there.

Yeah I have the same problem too!!!

I am watching to see if anyone out there know how to fix it.

I was wondering whether it was windows 7 that is the problem -- are you running that?

http://davidarchuleta.sg works for me. As does http://davidarchuleta.sg/wp-admin

@bangles: Please post a new topic and provide your site's url, a description of the problem and anything you did immediately before.

    @ mralancooper
you have an index.html file in the root that needs to be renamed or deleted to allow the wordpress index.php to work when installed
you should still be able to run the set up, however. Are you sure files are in root and not above root or in a folder inside of root?

the rest of you are being rude jumping in on someone else's topic. Also, saying "I have the same problem" does not help when obviously you don't have the same problem.

There was an "index.php" file in the root, but I had already renamed it to "xxxindex.php" and that didn't help. I can't find any index.html files there.

I own two domains under one account at Laughingsquid, so the root ("\") owns two folders ("www.otherdomain.com" and "www.mralancooper.com"). I've been assuming that "the root" in the installation instructions refers to the folder named "www.mralancooper.com". Is that correct? That's where all of the WP files are.

    Thanks for your help!

    that should work

    however, when I go here
    http://www.mralancooper.com/index.html
there is an index.html - check it out

Okay, I asked the Laughingsquid guys and they said:
    ---------------
This file indeed exists. It is the one here:
    http://mralancooper.com

It says 'your website is ready...' You'll just need to delete or rename that index.html file so the WordPress' index.php file can serve by default.

    The file is located here:
    ---------------
So I went to the web/content dir and renamed the index.html file. Unfortunately, I still get the identical 404 when I try to run the WP install script. However, if I try to view "www.mralancooper.com", I no longer get the contents of the index.html file; instead it gives me a "Forbidden" 403 error.

    Progress, but not success.
    THANKS

ah..that explains part of it then
you will need to move the wordpress files/folders to
    /www.mralancooper.com/web/content

IOW, put them in the /content folder

    Bingo! That's the problem.

    Thanks for the help!

As usual, it's obvious once you know the problem.

I'm now getting an error from the install script, but that's certainly a different problem, which I'll work on for awhile before I bug you about it.

    thanx,
    Alan
