• Hi this is my first and hopefully last desperate cry for help from the WordPress community so I will try and cover exactly how badly I have messed up my site.

I updated my WordPress version and plugins this morning
I added a free theme from the Manage theme panel (Unfortunaltely cant remember the name)
I activated the above them and from this moment my site and wordpress backend has crashed and I am unable to access

I got an error message saying that the site had caused an error because of a youtube object that was linked to a youtube plugin that I had on the site

I deleted the new template folder and all contents via FTP

I deleted the plugin in question that was causing the error hoping this would solve the issue

I have also renamed my plugin folder following reading some FAQ’s to plugins.hold

I am now not getting an error but also just getting a blank screen.

My database with all posts etc is intact so I have all the conent.

Is there a way to reset the site to any template to get the access back?

Hope this makes sense. Site was at :

  • You did basically first trouble shooting. Perhaps the plugin (or less likely the theme) edited some core files. You can try to download the version of WP that you are running and use FTP to replace the WP files.

Thanks for your speedy response Roy

I think it must have been the theme as it went down as soon as I enabled the theme and was working fine before that, the plugin had been on for a while.

How do you replace the WP files I installed via fantastico control panel so was all done automatically

Is it all files or are there some common files

I hope you also got FTP credentials.
It’s impossible to say what files could be edited by the theme, but I’d download the version of WP that I was running (3.2 I guess), unzip it on the computer, connect to the server with an FTP client and start overwring the wp-admin folder. If that doesn’t help, wp-content, etc.
In fact it’s a part of a manual installation:

    As for FTP:

    Hi Roy

I have done all the above and replaced every wordpress file but it hasnt made any difference.

I restored my database and could get into the admin and all posts are there but the site itself still just shows white screen.

Must be missing something but cant figure out what it is.

Any other things to try? So far

    1. Replaced all WordPress files via FTP client
    2. Removed all plugins
    3. Renamed plugin folder as per FAQ’s

Issue: Can get access to admin back end but posts just show a blank white page as does every front end page

If you can get access to the back end, change your active Theme to Twenty Eleven.

Do you still get a white page on the front end?

If so, then edit wp-config.php, and add this line:

    define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );

…and then report back with whatever errors are output on the front end.

    Hi Chip

Ok I have done exactly what you said

I had already deleted all themes so I only had Twenty Ten not Twenty Eleven but no joy still white screen only

I then altered the wp-config.php file and found the line already in but set to false. I edited this to true as per your instructions

I did nothing else other than exactly what you describe above.

It now seems to be working apart from the images which have all been lost.

Thanks for your help that is still a great result.

I still have absolutely no idea what went wrong and wordpress is needing updating again as I deleted worpress and re-installed then restored databse to try and fix

Very confused but seem to be back and working
