Broken Link Checker
Broken Link Checker installation failed. (15 posts)

After running fine for a couple of weeks, Broken Link Checker just started putting up this message in a pink box on all the pages visible to logged in users (not just plugin pages, and not just users with admin permissions either).

"Broken Link Checker installation failed. Try deactivating and then reactivating the plugin."

With a highly detailed report of where errors creeped up. Deactivated, then reactivated. Problem recurred within 2 hours.

There are threads related to this problem on multi-site blog, but this is a single installation running a Woo Theme and

Strange thing is trying to figure out what provoked this. No recent updates to core or plugins or theme. Not even any new broken links.

Mine's been doing the same thing every day for three days now. It's starting to be very annoying.

I get a pageful of the error message and have to deactivate and active every day.

I've been using Broken Link Checker for months. I think I'll look for an alternative at least until this is fixed.

Why use a plugin when you don't have to? Sites run faster and cleaner without them.

I found this and am checking it out now:

Living Inspired By Design | The Pain of a Broken Link

The only con is having to use it manually, but I can live with that. I'll just add a(nother) task to Remember The Milk :)

    Thanks Cheryl for sharing!
I found this tool - Xenu link checker. One of wordpress hosting providers recommend it on their web site. It's a manual tool too.
So yeah, one more task to Remember the Milk! :)

Thanks for sharing Expana! I like that it's fast, checks more than just links, and you can keep a log :) I downloaded and am using it now.

I am having the same problem--pink box, big description. Deactivating and reactivating the plugin does not fix it. Single installation.

It's the failure of the dashboard widget that causes this behaviour. In my case, it was the Limit Login Attempts plugin that was the cause and it has had to be removed. It might be that plugin or another one that is coming into conflict with Broken Link Checker so it's worth having a check to see how you go.

There may be a server load but I like the idea of automatic link checking and I am glad to have Broken Link Checker working again. Others are entitled to their opinions...

I completely deleted the plugin and then reinstalled it. So far the problem hasn't come back.

Delete and re-install does not fix it..........

It will be back in a few days with the error

Just check your site for 'compromises'

I was hit by a zero day between the 29 APR- 9 MAY, but BAs...d ISP would not track it down.

This is despite all the CHMOD . htaccess and security I was running inside WP.

I have also the same issue on one of my web site. Delete and re-install does not fix it..........

I have disable the plugin until this issue is solved...

My internally located "Development system" (my dev system is not connected to the internet) is showing the same issue so this discounts any foul play by any third parties.

The development system hasn't had any updates for over two months so it's not related to any plugin issues elsewhere.

There is an active discussion on the plugin author's website so he is aware of this and tried a debugging release and someone has gone back to the previous version (1.7) and I have been able to do the same to see if the issue affects that as well.
