   My smilies & other images have been been broken ever since I applied the custom permalink structure. What am I doing wrong?

   use absolute linkage instead of relative links.
   eg...
   an image in:
   http://abc.com/images/a.jpg
   can be called as:
   /images/a.jpg
   or
   http://abc.com/images/a.jpg
   and not
   ../images/a.jpg
   hope that makes sense.

   well smilies should work automatically.
   and smilies are working on ur site.
   so are the images...

   You don't have permission to access /wp-images/smilies/icon_confused.gif on this server.
   either u did not upload the smiley folder or that folder has permission problems.
