Broken Image Links

I have recently found that my subdomain which is a testing environment for a new site has lost all links to images and to .pdf documents. The media directory is the default and when logging into the server the images are there. I have downloaded, deleted and then reuploaded and still nothing. Please help! I have a client that is truly irritated, and I have not found a solution to this.
