Using the brand new day theme, and I guess I’m missing something basic. If I do not modify the widgets when I activate the theme, I get all my pages in nice clean rounded rectangle buttons on my right sidebar (like the demo pictures illustrate). However, as soon as I add any widgets to the right sidebar (archives of posts, for example) the page buttons disappear. Is there a way to keep the buttons for my pages on the right while still adding widgets underneath them?

  • Yes indeed! Set up a custom menu of your desired pages under appearance -> menus, then use the custom menus widget to display the menu in the sidebar, along with your other desired widgets. The menu links will be formatted in rounded rectangles like the default page links.

Awesome, thanks! I figured I was missing something basic. 🙂

I moved from wordpress.com to self-hosted. Custom menus on self-hosted using Brand New Day theme are no longer hierarchical (ie, menu lses page parent-child hierarchy) and display as a single list of buttons. The color change functions hierachically, but the buttons no longer nest and cascade. How do i get back the fully hierarchical menus?

That’s because the original Brand New Day theme didn’t have flyout menus; they were added when it was ported to .com. Someday I’ll get around to updating the .org version to have the flyout menus. 🙂
