    If this is too off-base, please tell me, because it is more about blogging in general, than WordPress specifically.

    1) Is there a particular etiquette to adding a site to your Blogroll? For instance, If I really like some blog and read it everyday, is it OK to just add it to my blogroll without asking permission?

    2) On a more complex subject, make believe I wanted to spice up my post today with a photo of Michael Jackson going to court in his pajamas. Can I take the photo from a online newswire, give them the credit, and use it on my site?

    Again, sorry if this is the wrong forum for this, but maybe there are other clueless WordPress users out there like me who can learn from the experts.

    1. Yes.

    2. Yes, unless they clearly state that you can't.

    On a point of law - information and images published on the net are not up for grabs unless the author states they are not. The case law in the US and UK is the reverse. Authors who are willing for their work to be redistributed can expressly release them. Unless they do so normal copyright and image rights apply.

    Yes, but if he's just posting the photo to comment on it or an article connected with it, wouldn't that come under "fair use"?

    See these links for some help on understanding what's proper and what isn't. And as Root pointed out, I imagine it does depend on where you are as to what can be enforced.

    From what I gather in this more-complex-than-I-thought issue:

    AP photo of Michael Jackson on trialt: fair use

    professional photo of Michael Jackson used in Vanity Fair spread: not fair use

    Although since I have an official readership of 1 -- I probably shouldn't worry too much at this point.

    I think Wacko Jacko's got bigger problems to worry about right now than who's using his photographs! {{snort}}
