• Hi guys,
I’m due to launch my site in a few weeks and I don’t know what the actual copyright rules are when it comes to blogging.
My site is all about financial news and I’m not sure if I am able to copy and paste articles from news sites or not? Obviously I would credit the site and author but is this allowed?

I don’t have the time to write 10’s of articles a day as well as run other aspects of the site so bringing news in from the outside would be great but I don’t want to get pulled up for any breaches of copyright when doing this.
Anyone got any experience with this?

If the sites have copyrighted their content, as most have, then copying their content is considered stealing and prosecutable to the fullest extent of the law. If the sites offer their content via a free license or a conditional license, you can republish the content as long as certain conditions are met. For example, content from Wikinews can be republished as long as the content is attributed to Wikinews, but the images within the news articles may be copyrighted.

Why not link to each article and write a brief summary with some additional comment instead of a direct copy?

Cutting & pasting other people’s content without permission will bring you trouble sooner or later.
