Blog templates problem (11 posts)

    I'm testing the theme right now and I'm having difficulties with blog templates. Here is what's happening:

    Problem 1
    I created a home page using a custom home page template, and I also created a Blog page, but haven't selected any custom template like full width or grid, as I want to have it by default with sidebar.

    Then I go to WordPress Settings > Reading and select my custom home page as "Front Page" and also by "Blog" page as Posts Page. Then I select "Summary" as the feed option, but the theme seems not to respect this setting. Whether is set to Full Text or Summary - it always shows Full Text.

    Problem 2
    When I choose my Blog page as Posts Page, and then go to my Blog page and change the template to Blog Full-Width or Grid - it doesn't work, my blog page still shows posts in a normal way, full text with a sidebar.

    The only way to make the other templates work is to go back to Settings > Reading and change the Post Page setting to "--Select--", then I can change the template of the blog.

    But the it still shows Full Text instead of Summary which looks really bad especially when you use grid template and the post is long.

    Problem 3
    SO I've checked the content.php file and found a section which says "Only display Excerpts for Search" so I tested it and yes, it shows excerpts this time instead of full text, but the "Read More" button is missing...

    Ideally, I'd like the blog to look like on your demo website, as excerpts and with "Read More" buttons. Could you please tell me how can I achieve this?

    Thanks a lot!

    Hello,

    to achieve the same as the demo you will have to use the more tag on your posts. That should fix 1 and 2.

    To have a different blog template you just have to make a new page and select the required blog template. For this to appear as your only blog you will have to make a custom menu and make the blog template your blog page and don't add the default blog to your menu.

    Hi Ossie

    to achieve the same as the demo you will have to use the more tag on your posts. That should fix 1 and 2.

    This works as you said and sort of fixes the problem, but it's not exactly how I'd like it to work.

    I'd like to have the basic WordPress functionality as choosing how you want to show your posts to work. I'd like all my posts to show as excerpts unless I choose otherwise, because in this way I don't need to remember to use "<!--more-->" in my blog and I want all my posts to be shorten the same way without counting the words, if you know what I mean.

    Do you think this is something fairly easy to achieve by a quick modification of "content.php" file?

    I tried to do it myself and replaced this piece of code:

    <?php if ( is_search() ) : // Only display Excerpts for Search ?>
    	<div class="entry-summary">
    		<?php the_excerpt(); ?>
    	</div><!-- .entry-summary -->
    	<?php else : ?>
    	<div class="entry-content">
    		<?php the_content( __( 'Read More', 'Formation' ) ); ?>
    		<?php wp_link_pages( array( 'before' => '<div class="page-links">' . __( 'Pages:', 'Formation' ), 'after' => '</div>' ) ); ?>
    	</div><!-- .entry-content -->
    	<?php endif; ?>

    with this:

    <div class="entry-content">
    		<?php the_excerpt(); ?>
    		<a class="more-link" href="<?php the_permalink() ?>">Read More</a>
    	</div><!-- .entry-content -->

    and it works more or less... but the "Read More" button shows up outside the excerpt paragraph and therefore outside the post excerpt text...

    I'd really appreciate your help, I think I'm very close to make it work as I'd like to, it's just that I'm completely new to php.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Ossie

    I'm using my localhost for the development so it's not available online yet. But I barely started so I haven't changed anything yet withing the theme.

    I only installed it and trying to make it work the way I want.

    Everything is set by default, custom home page + Blog page without any template, I want to use the default one.

    The ONLY thing I was trying to change was the bottom of "content.php" file so the blog shows excerpts (Summary), not the full text without using "More" option within posts.

    Thanks

    Hi Ossie/waveman777

    I'm having the same problem with my blog also. I'm using the Blog Grid layout for my blog page and would just like it to display my chosen blog excerpt instead of the entire post. I'd like for the Home Page recent posts section to also just display the excerpt also.

    I've tried editing the content.php file as waveman777 suggested and also tried using a more tag in my posts but neither of these seem to work for me.

    You can see my site in development at: http://www.redwing-hosting.com/ianallan/

    Ossie I'm also happy to purchase the Pro version of the theme as you have helped me on another problem earlier. Is it possible to upgrade the theme rather than reinstalling the pro version?

    Many thanks

    Hello, currently the blog grid is set to show the post content and can be controlled by using the more tag in the post. However for the next update I will change this to just show the excerpt.

    The recent posts on the homepage already just show the excerpt.

    You would have to install the pro version but this won't have an effect on the content other than the feature text areas.

    Hi Ossie

    That would be awesome. Can you please tell us when can we expect the next update?

    There is also one more thing I just noticed. When I use default blog template I don't see breadcrumbs. They show up on every page but blog. Is this something that can be easily fixed?

    Thanks!

    Hi Ossie

    Thanks for the new version. I updated it just now, and I see that the custom blog templates are working fine now showing the excerpts of the post by default, but there is still problem with the default one which I'm currently using.

    The default blog page (with no custom template selected) is till showing full posts and the Settings>Reading>Summary option is not respected. Is there any possible quick fix for that? It would be great and the theme would work as expected.

    Also, when default blog settings are used, breadcrumbs on the right side of the page title are missing. I hope this can be fixed as well.

    All best
    Norbert

    Hello,

    The summary option in the settings only works for rss feeds as far as I am aware? To have excerpts instead of full text you will have to either use the more tag in your posts or change some code:

    I am working on a fix for the breadcrumb issue

    thanks
