Blog promotion

I am hosting my wordpress blog on a godaddy server. What I want to know is what I can do to help promote it and drive traffic to it. Is there places I can sign up to have it listed when people do topic searches? I realize that if I hand out my site that can help drive traffic, but I would like to see people be able to do a search for topics and find my blog as well. I am getting virtually no traffic to my site. I have the option of making my blog public to google, etc. checked. Is there anything else I can do?
