   Hi, is it possible to change the layout of the main blog page to that of a gallery style, rather than list??

   yes

   you could edit index.php; or, if you don't want the change to show in the archive pages, etc, create a home.php and make the changes there.

   you will need quite a good knowledge of html, css, and php, and of wordpress functions.

   Ahh many thanks... I was hoping that there was just a setting in "setting" s ;)
