I tried running the automatic upgrade, which failed twice. The third time I started getting the message "Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute." This message comes up even on the admin pages. So I'm now pretty much stuck. Any ideas?
OK. I found a file called .maintenance had been added to the site. I deleted that and the site came back. That was kind of scary. But it seems this is a problematic upgrade, at least with automatic installation.

Thank you so much for this post. My site http://www.7books.net was locked in maintenance mode until I found this. Thank you!
SO was mine, I goofed and clicked away while a plug in was updating...

Hey Haecceity,
Thanks for the post; it was very helpful. I just posted an article and then I went fiddling around with "updates". Next thing I knew I was in "maintenance mode". I wish there was a way to rate this post cause I give it a +5. :D
thanks soo much for this.. my site codingfriends.com just went down and I could not get back in the admin area, was going to open up my sql query browser!!!..
Just removed the .maintenance file, and now I get a fatal error:
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare trackback_rdf() (previously declared in /home/juusan/wasabimon.com/wp-includes/comment-template.php:747) in /home/juusan/wasabimon.com/wp-includes/deprecated.php on line 2515
Any idea what's causing these problems?
Do a manual upgrade. It looks like your install didn't finish before it bombed out.
Not a huge deal! Just manually copy the files up and try again. Should be easy as 3.14.

Thanks for this!
I had a bit of a scare there myself. My site was stuck in maintenance mode and all I was doing was updating a plugin!
Thanks for the help.
