I normally view my blog using Firefox and everything looks fine. I just visited my blog (The Bradford Report)using Internet Explorer 8. I almost had a heart attack. The most recent posting looks OK but after that, large chunks of text are missing. Strange HTML-like stuff (<!–[endif]–>) is displayed. It’s a total mess.

I use the WordPress default theme (WordPress Default 1.6 by Michael Heilemann) and I have installed the latest update to the WordPress software (WordPress 2.8.2.).

  • Site url? Looks like you have a bad conditional comment somewhere in your markup/template files.

    Hi esmi!

    Here is the URL: http://www.BradfordReport.com

I thought so too but I have been scrupulous about putting only a minimum amount of HTML into my postings by hand. Most of the HTML comes from WordPress.

    Thanks for helping. …Jim Bradford

Don’t paste content from Microsoft Word into WordPress as the pasted text will also contain Word’s own formatting. Sooner or later, this formatting will stop your pages from being displayed correctly (if at all) in Internet Explorer. If you cannot possibly manage without Word, paste your text into NotePad (or another text editor) first, then copy from NotePad into WordPress.

Thanks esmi. I try to use WordPress’s “paste text from Word” utility which strips out the junk. I may have forgotten to do it at some point. I’ll go back this evening and re-post all my blogs the safe way. …Jim

Whew! I spent the morning hand-editing my blog posts to get it to work with Internet Explorer 8. The solution involved finding and deleting XML code such as this:

    <!–[if gte mso 9]><xml> Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 </xml><![endif]–><!–[if gte mso 9]><xml> </xml><![endif]–><!–[if !mso]><span class=”mceItemObject” classid=”clsid:38481807-CA0E-42D2-BF39-B33AF135CC4D” id=ieooui></span> <mce:style><! st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } –> <!–[endif]–><!– –><!–[if gte mso 10]> <mce:style><! /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:”Table Normal”; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:””; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:”Times New Roman”; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} –> <!–[endif]–><!–[if gte mso 9]><xml> </xml><![endif]–><!–[if gte mso 9]><xml> </xml><![endif]–>

I have a similar problem but my sidebar columns are missing in IE and display good in FF. Can you please take a look at http://www.JoansCraftWorld.com

    Hi Joan.

I’m not a WordPress staffer (just another user) but I noticed my side bars were also missing until I cleaned up my the XML code mentioned above. The disappearing side bars were just part of a host of problems produced by the extraneous code.

One big unresolved question is where did that unwelcome code come from? I know I didn’t edit it in and from some experiments, I’m pretty sure it didn’t come from pasting Microsoft Word text into my blog either. I hope the WordPress staff will track this down.

It’s Word’s formatting that was pasted in with the content.

@joanscraftworld: You have a similar problem. Have a look at the link given above.

I am having a similar problem, but I NEVER use MS Word to edit or write blog content. Can you take a look? http://wallingfordwired.com

everything looks great in FF or Opera, but in IE8 the sidebars are dropped waaaayyyyy down to the bottom of the page, and the nav bar is slightly off. Any help would be appreciated.

Start by sorting out the validation errors on the site.

Holy crap, thanks, but this might be beyond my ability to fix…do ALL of these have to be corrected in order for the blog to display correctly in IE8?

Most of them yes. Some may come from plugins and will be beyond your ability to control but I think you need to get the total number of errors in the theme and your content down to single figures if at all possible if you want a decent cross-browser display.

OK, I’ll do my best…fixing code is definitely NOT my forte!

BTW, this just shows my novice status in this: what file am I editing to correct these issues? Are all these errors in the same file??

Wow, I just checked mine too (190 erros!). Didn’t know you could check for such. Thanks for the link, esmi. I’m starting with index.php as I recognize one of the errors as being in that file. It helps to have the line numbers!
