    Hello all,

I have in the last 24 hours decided to go ahead and set up my own blog with my own host. I chose to use one.com, and my blog location will be at http://www.edsmusings.com.

I have installed WordPress in a directory within the root on the server, e.g. all the files are found in /Wordpress. I want the blog to be visible to people who type http://www.edsmusings.com into their address bar.

Having installed WordPress I can access the control panel without any problems at http://www.edsmusings.com/wordpress/wp-admin/.

I have followed word-for-word the instructions at http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory which I believe should now allow the blog to be viewed by people typing in http://www.edsmusings.com.

However, anyone who does view that URL will simply see the one.com holding page.

Looking at the root on the server, the only things visible is a folder titled 'wordpress', the index.php file which I manually updated to reflect the new directory, and the .htaccess file.

I'd be very grateful as to whether people think this is user error, or something to raise with one.com. I am not a techie and haven't used a web host before.

    Thanks,

    Ed

Your problem is with nested directories. You have not installed your blog on edsmusings.com, but on edsmusings.com/wordpress/
The correct way to do this to make it work as you want it to work would be to put all the wordpress files and folders into your root directory (In the same spot that you put the wordpress folder). Everything that you have in that wordpress folder should be there, but NOT the actual folder "wordpress" itself.

Damn I feel like a fool! It would appear http://www.edsmusings.com was showing the one.com holding page because it was being loaded out of cache. Having held the shift button and clicked refresh, it loaded as it should.

Thanks for the prompt responses guys.
