   I'm new to WordPress and recently noticed an error message in the WP admin panel saying that the latest update had failed. I'm using WP 2.9.1 and I tried to install the new update by ticking the box to switch automatic updates on. The update process started but only got as far as "Unzipping WP" but never got to the "update successful" bit.

   I have since been unable to log back into the WP admin panel (the page is blank). What's worse is that my blog has also disappeared and the page is completely blank.

   I have made a number of template amendments and don't want to lose them. Can anyone advise some simple steps to get my blog back up and running?

   well, first off you should always have backups of your theme and your database.

   you can still make the theme backup using ftp

   You may have to go the manual upgrade route....again by ftp
