Greetings. my blog is (was) vintagebluesguitars.com/blog It's a word press blog created by my daughter for me about 1 yr ago and it worked fine. The blog is hosted by my website, rather than wordpress.

About a week ago someone informed me they can't see the blog..no data error..I checked and it's gone. I worked w/ my host provider and they claim to have no backup of the blog files, and neither do I..I know, dumb.

Any way from the wordpress end I could recover the data? Ideas..?

    ..Thanks , Tom

Your blog can't access your database. Get sure your wp-config.php file (cant be "wp-config-sample.php", that has got to be renamed for "wp-config.php") is still there (either in your blog directory or one level above -- not more than one level above). If it is, check if its settings are correct (database user, name, host, password).

    Cheers

Vangrog, thanks for the tip..I'm not real familiar with what to do with the above info you provided..do I find that .php info in wordpress or my web host info? Sorry for basic questions Tom

You need to log into your server (using an FTP client, for example). There you'll see all you have stored on the server. Once you've got a website besides the blog, I suppose your blog is inside a folder (possibly named "blog"). So, either in your website root, or inside that folder you've got to have a file named "wp-config.php". If you find it, download it and check if all the settings are correct (basically: database user, name, host and password). If you dont find that file, download wordpress, extract it into your pc, open the file named "wp-config-sample.php" and edit those informations (database user, name, host and password). Save it. Rename it to "wp-config.php" and upload it either into your website root or into your blog folder. See if it works.

P.s.: the information about your database, if you dont have it, you need to check with your Host, as well as login and password for FTP, if you don't know it too.

    Cheers

    gives:

    Can’t select database
We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username and password is okay) but not able to select the wordpressblog database.

    Are you sure it exists?
Does the user vbgblog have permission to use the wordpressblog database?
On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your username, so it would be like username_wordpressblog. Could that be the problem?
If you don't know how to setup a database you should contact your host. If all else fails you may find help at the WordPress Support Forums.

Thanks for the ideas folks, I'll forward the info to my daughter who set up the blog/website. Below is a response from her regarding a previous post from vangrog:
i'm looking at your blog files and everything seems to be in order. The
wp-config.php still has the same info as on your database. And it's in the
same location as it should be. Can you write back to the wordpress forum
    and
tell them that? and ask them why, after you've used this blog for over a
    year, it suddenly disappears?

    ..thanks..Tom

Tom, the folks here are trying to help you with exactly what your daughter asked. There are two main pieces to your blog: the php code and the database. Sounds like the code files are still there, but without a database you got nothing.

At some point, it seems like you'd want to use a tool like phpMyAdmin to see if your db still exists. If it still exists, do the tables still have data in them?

ok, thanks..so what I'm understanding is that the code for the blog exists, but the data is gone. What I don't understand is why the data disappeared? ..I only 'update' the blog like once every two months..thanks, Tom

Apparently, yes. If you have access to phpMyAdmin, as Chris suggested, use it to log into your database server. See if your database is still there. If you find it, try repairing and then optimizing it. See if it works.

If not, you can restore a back-up if you have any. Otherwise, you should reinstall your blog.

    Cheers

Tom - I can assure you that nobody from wordpress.org has access to your data. It wasn't us :-)

Have you asked your host? Perhaps they have logs that might show where your data (or database) went -- and who did it. (This is assuming the data is actually gone, of course).

..thanks folks..I'll try the phpAdmin ..and, unfortunately, I had no back up assuming it would be backed up my ipower, which I found out is not true, they don't guarantee backup, and they don't have the data.

"Tom - I can assure you that nobody from wordpress.org has access to your data. It wasn't us :-)"

Good one! I figured the blog must be so good it's worth stealing ;-)

    ..thanks for your time..Tom
