Blog by Email using GMail? (23 posts)

Seeing that Gmail allows POP access, has anyone successfully linked their blog-by-email function to a gmail account? I've tried using pop.gmail.com port 995 but keep timing out... Chances are that I'm coming across a router issue since it's timing out, but haven't found it yet.

The other thing that makes me wonder if it will work is that the GMail instructions say that SSL is required when POPing. Any thoughts?

    Thanks in Advance!

I am also having the same problem. Is there any solution to this? I proceeded to set up an email account with my host and that one works. I am wondering if 995 is the right port.

I have it working now, but whenever i send a mail from my gmail account to the secret account, you do not see the post on the website. only when you log in you are able to view the post.
However whenever i send a mail from yahoo, it shows in the post and on the website. I am not sure if there are some settings with gmail that are causing the problem.

I can't get POP access to work with Gmail either - what client are you using?

SmartStephen, would you mind posting your "Writing by Email" setup? Did you perform anything odd or different in order to stop the time-out issue?

    Regards.

pop.gmail.com is not a pop3 server but a pop3s server (hence port 995 instead of 110). In fact port 110 isn't even open on that server...

I would also like to see the setup that got this to work, though.

sounds like google only supports secure pop (port 995), and wordpress only supports regular pop (port 110).

that makes gmail incompatible, at least until someone fixes wordpress.

Anyone try changing the port argument setting for the connect function in wp-includes/class-pop3.php?

There more difference than just the port though. Does anyone know if it's possible to make a pop3s connection with php?

In practical terms: is there a known way to post by email using gmail, today? And, if so, how?

Okay, I fixed the problem. Had to write my own files, but at least I learned something in the process. You can grab them here.

I tried the solution at http://www.audiolicious.com/weblog/2005/03/wordpress-gmail-mobile-blogging/, but am getting an error! Any ideas?

    Warning: imap_open(): Couldn't open stream {pop.gmail.com:995/pop3/ssl/novalidate-cert} in /home/macnific/www/www/wordpress/class_mbox.php on line 35

    Check out
    http://www.economysizegeek.com/?page_id=395

    You HAVE to have:
    IMAP compiled with SSL support
    PHP compiled with IMAP support

    Try this as a test:
    % php -r '$m = imapopen({pop.gmail.com:995/pop3/ssl/novalidate-cert}INBOX, “[your.email]@gmail.com, “[your password]); vardump($m);’

    and you should get

    resource(4) of type (imap)

    If you see

bool(false) you either lack IMAP support, or your IMAP library was not compiled with SSL support

I just installed Postie from http://www.economysizegeek.com/wp-mail/ It included options for pop3s. So far, it works so freaking well it's scary.

You can use PHP + XPertMailer V2 (XPM2) to read e-mails from Gmail POP3 account, like this sample: http://www.xpertmailer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=47
